Starting Towns

Starting Towns are an interesting idea, and the functionality for them is added into the game already as we can see by character creation. The problem with starting towns is that for a lot of races, the starting towns don't cater to the character as 1) A fully functional city, and 2) A place to level up for a bit and get used to the mud. Starting towns should also be used as a good tool to spread the lore about races.

What I'm proposing is that we all get cracking on the builder port and make this a reality on the mud. It's not something that the Immortals should be in charge of since it has relatively nothing to do with code and everything to do with using OLC on BP.

Some towns would need little tweaks and additions. Tol Honeth, for instance, is a fantastic town for a starter. Add a beginning area within the town, make it feasible for someone to attain level 10 or so before leaving and venturing off into the world, and possibly add some newer low level quests to intrigue people into checking it out instead of grinding their ways through the arctic plains.

Other towns, such as Mal Yaska, or the ever in development Rak Goska that I've been "working" on for ages, need to have a bit more of a face lift in order to be properly used as starting towns. There's too many aggressive mobs there, nothing for a low level person to do / level with, but a place like Mal Yaska could easily be tweaked and added to in order to serve functionally as the lower level city, and the higher level temple.

In some cases (not sure what, but lets start a discussion), it might even be better to just wipe the town entirely and start from scratch. Sendar is still, after all, the base ROM starting town that's been tweaked here and there. It really has nothing to do with King Fulrach and his pleasant palace, or even the rolling farmlands.

Anyways.... this is something we as players could all do to help give the mud a nice little boost. Let out some creativity, make it fun for lowbies to be here, and make each race be a little more unique in the way they go about leveling. It'll help create a sense of territory instead of just "oh thats 30 rooms east".

And finally, the last addition I would suggest is make all of the towns have content that could bring players back there at later levels. Miniquests for higher levels? Phat looooot? Something wonderfully intriguing to make you come back as a buff level 91?

I expect comments.... DO IT!!!

One of the reasons I held off with hometowns was an issue with respect to recalling. It suddenly becomes a lot more viable to "run" by wording, which is slightly lame as it is, given that movement points are effectively limitless, but even moreso when you can't just word to follow them. It does also potentially make things more difficult for new people, as they can no longer have all their location-related woes sorted by being pointed at the directions{1,2} files, and things aren't that logically placed and won't be 'til we get relinking sorted. However, I see your point - by adding sufficient "entertainment" within a region, then it's a postponed issue, until they have more confidence and general knowledge - Anheg 22:47, 13 March 2008 (CET)
